How to convert a Foreign License to an FAA ATP Certificate

This post will elaborate on the steps needed to convert a foreign license into an FAA ATP Certificate through Airbus or Boeing training with International Aviation Training Services (IATS) in Miami, Florida.

Understand the Training Requirements

Converting a foreign license to an FAA ATP certificate involves specific training requirements. Unlike some Civil Aviation Authorities, the FAA does not allow direct conversions without training. The process includes three main parts:

  1. Airline Transport Pilot – Certification Training Program (ATP-CTP) course

  2. Airline Transport Multi-Engine Exam (ATM exam, aka the “ATP written”)

  3. Type rating, culminating in the FAA ATP check ride

ATP-CTP Course

The ATP-CTP course is mandatory for all FAA airmen. Introduced after the Colgan Air Crash of 2009, this course is required whether you hold an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate or a foreign license (CPL or ATPL). IATS has a unique FAA approval to do the 4 day ground school virtually over Zoom!

Course Details:

  • Duration: 4 days of ground school, 1 day of fixed-based simulator training, and 1 day of full-flight simulator training.

  • Simulator: With IATS, the Airbus A330 simulator is used.

  • Topics Covered: Aerodynamics, meteorology, air carrier operations, navigation, automation, safety, adverse weather, and more.

Upon completion, you’ll receive an ATP-CTP course completion certificate, which is a prerequisite for the ATM exam and never expires.

ATM Exam

The ATM exam, taken after completing the ATP-CTP course, consists of 125 questions. We recommend using Shepard Air study materials, which guarantee over 90% for the exam.

Permitted Aids: Calculators without stored memory, scales, straightedges, protractors, plotters, navigation computers, log sheets, and all models of aviation-oriented calculating devices directly related to the test (FAA AC 60-11C).

Type Rating

Type ratings can be completed on an Airbus or Boeing aircraft with IATS. We offer both accelerated and initial/standard curriculums based on your qualifications and flight experience. The type rating training concludes with the FAA ATP check ride and oral examination.

Steps Leading Up to the Training

  1. Contact an FAA Approved Provider

    • IATS is experienced and can assist with your training. Our admissions team will help you find a cost-effective curriculum suited to your experience level.

  2. Request a Foreign License Verification Letter

    • If you do not hold an FAA Commercial Pilot’s Certificate with a multi-engine land rating, request a foreign license verification letter through IACRA.

    • Instructions: Create an IACRA account, request a “new request,” and choose the North Texas Flight Standards District Office.

  3. Gather Your Documents

    • Collect your pilot’s licenses, medical certificate, passport, visa, logbooks, and additional documents required by the training provider.

  4. Choose Training Dates

    • IATS will work with you to schedule your training dates during time periods that work with your rosters. We understand the need to provide efficient and cost-effective schedules.

  5. Apply for TSA Approval (non US citizens only)

    • Select the applicable category (1 or 2) depending on your experience. Detailed instructions will be provided by IATS and fingerprinting locations can be found on the TSA website and an IATS representative can also assist you with finding a location in Miami for the training, or around the USA if you have flights in prior to the training.

  6. Arrange Travel and Accommodation

    • IATS offers negotiated hotel rates and travel agent assistance for trainees.

  7. Complete the FAA 8710 Form

    • Required for any changes for an FAA airman. IATS provides guidance and detailed instructions for this process.
